A devastating road accident following the highly anticipated local derby between Power Dynamos and Nkana Football Club has claimed the lives of three football fans and left five others injured. The derby, held at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on December 7, ended with Nkana securing a 2-1 victory over Power Dynamos. However, the post-match celebrations were overshadowed by the heartbreaking loss of life and injuries on the Ndola-Kitwe dual carriageway at Maposa area.

The Victims

Copperbelt Police Commissioner Peacewell Mweemba has identified the deceased as Joseph Lungu (27), Osward Katebula (28), and Wedson Muwowo (27), all from Wusakile Township in Kitwe. The three were among a group of football enthusiasts returning home from the match.

The accident involved a Toyota Sienta, which was extensively damaged in the crash. The driver, identified as Peter Kombe (25) of Ndeke Secondary School, survived the accident but sustained serious injuries. He is currently receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Kitwe Teaching Hospital (KTH).

The Accident

The fatal accident occurred at approximately 7:30 PM on the Ndola-Kitwe dual carriageway. The Toyota Sienta carrying the fans lost control at Maposa area, leading to a collision that claimed the lives of three passengers on the spot.

According to Police Commissioner Mweemba, “Reference is made to a fatal road traffic accident which Wusakile traffic had dealt with on 07.12.24 involving a Toyota Sienta. Three passengers died on the spot, and the driver, who was initially unidentified, has now been identified as Peter Kombe. Four other passengers, who sustained serious injuries, are yet to be identified, and investigations are ongoing.”

Injured Passengers

In addition to the fatalities, five passengers were injured, with four of them sustaining severe injuries. While their identities are yet to be confirmed, they are reportedly receiving medical attention at local health facilities. The condition of these individuals remains critical, and the authorities are working to notify their families.

Football and Tragedy

The Power Dynamos-Nkana derby, also known as the “El Kopala Derby,” is one of Zambia’s most fiercely contested football rivalries. Thousands of fans flocked to Levy Mwanawasa Stadium to witness the thrilling match. For Nkana supporters, the 2-1 victory was a moment of pride, but the joy was short-lived as news of the accident spread.

Football matches, particularly high-profile derbies, often unite communities and ignite intense passion among fans. Unfortunately, such events can also lead to risky behaviors, such as speeding or overcrowding in vehicles, as fans rush to return home.

Road Safety Concerns

The accident has reignited discussions about road safety in Zambia, particularly on busy routes like the Ndola-Kitwe dual carriageway. With increased traffic after major events, the likelihood of accidents rises significantly.

Key factors that contribute to road accidents in Zambia include:

  1. Overspeeding: Many drivers exceed speed limits, especially on highways.
  2. Overloading: Vehicles carrying passengers beyond their capacity are prone to instability.
  3. Fatigue: Long hours of driving, particularly after emotionally charged events like football matches, can impair judgment.
  4. Poor Road Conditions: While the dual carriageway is one of Zambia’s busiest routes, some sections may lack proper lighting and signage, increasing the risk of accidents.

Calls for Action

Following the accident, there have been calls for enhanced road safety measures, particularly during large public events. Some suggested interventions include:

Increased Police Patrols: Deploying traffic officers to monitor and control traffic during high-traffic periods.

Stricter Speed Enforcement: Installing speed cameras and imposing hefty fines for overspeeding.

Public Transport Alternatives: Providing affordable and reliable public transport options for fans attending events.

Education Campaigns: Raising awareness about the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of adhering to traffic rules.

Community Reaction

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through Wusakile Township, where the deceased were well-known. Friends and family members are mourning the loss of young lives full of promise. Social media platforms have been flooded with messages of condolence and prayers for the injured.

Nkana Football Club and Power Dynamos are expected to issue official statements expressing their condolences and solidarity with the affected families. Football clubs play a central role in their communities, and such incidents often bring teams and supporters together in mourning.

The Way Forward

As Zambia continues to grapple with road safety challenges, this incident serves as a somber reminder of the need for collective action. Government authorities, local communities, and football stakeholders must work together to ensure safer travel conditions for fans attending matches.

While the families of Joseph Lungu, Osward Katebula, and Wedson Muwowo mourn their loss, the focus now shifts to preventing similar tragedies in the future. Measures such as improving road infrastructure, enforcing traffic laws, and promoting responsible driving can save lives and preserve the joy of football events.

Conclusion

The Power Dynamos-Nkana derby was meant to be a celebration of football, showcasing the passion and energy of Zambian fans. However, the tragic accident has left an indelible mark on the hearts of many. As the community mourns the lives lost, there is a collective resolve to honor their memory by prioritizing safety and responsibility on the roads.

For now, the thoughts and prayers of the football community are with the families of the deceased and the injured.
